Biography John S. Moot is a commercial and business trial attorney with 26 years’ experience in the practice of law. He has substantial courtroom experience and regularly prosecutes and defends cases in state and federal courts. Mr. Moot concentrates his practice on prosecuting and defending large construction and real estate claims, anti-trust matters, misappropriation of trade secrets, as well as all types of breach of contract, employment and fraud claims in business disputes. In 2010 and 2011, Mr. Moot was named a San Diego Super Lawyer in the practice areas of Business Litigation and Construction Litigation. In 2009 and 2010, Mr. Moot was selected by his peers as one of the top attorneys in San Diego and acknowledged in a special edition of The Daily Transcript as one of the best and brightest in the legal arena. Mr. Moot has handled several high profile legal matters, both civil and criminal, involving extensive media coverage. He has argued several cases before the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal and the State Appellate Court, six of which have resulted in published opinions. He has authored several articles published in the Opinion section of the newspaper on both legal and environmental matters. Mr. Moot has a history of public service. He served six years on the Chula Vista City Council, two of those years as Deputy Mayor. He is a former member of the Chula Vista Planning Commission. His commitment while in office to public safety resulted in Mr. Moot being the second non-sworn peace officer to be given an honorary lifetime membership in the Chula Vista Police Officers Association. Mr. Moot served as the Chairman of the San Diego Regional Energy Policy Advisory Council which conducted a 30-year infrastructure study and published the comprehensive San Diego Regional Energy Plan adopted by the San Diego Association of Governments. While on the Executive Committee of the San Diego Regional Power Pool, in 1999 Mr. Moot helped orchestrate one of the largest purchases of green energy in the State of California at that time. For the last eight years, Mr. Moot has been on the Board of Directors of the Center for Sustainable Energy. He is the immediate past president, having served two years as President and CEO. Mr. Moot formerly served on the Board of the Eastlake Educational Foundation and currently serves on Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center’s Board and the Finance Committee of the Downtown Business Partnership. He served as Chairman of a joint elementary and high school task force as well as a campaign finance reform committee which proposed sweeping changes to the City’s campaign finance law. His commitment to community service resulted in his induction into the Center for Public Interest Law’s Wall of Fame, along with several other prominent San Diego judges and attorneys. Mr. Moot is a fourth generation attorney from Buffalo, New York, where his father, grandfather, and great grandfather were respected members of Buffalo’s legal community. Practice Areas
