John is recognized in the 2015 edition of Super Lawyers in the Business Litigation category. This is the fifth year John has been selected for this honor. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process is multi-phased and includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations.

In 2009 and 2010, John was selected by his peers as one of the top attorneys in San Diego and acknowledged in a special edition of The Daily Transcript as one of the best and brightest in the legal arena.

John has handled several high profile legal matters, both civil and criminal, involving extensive media coverage. He has argued several cases before the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal and the State Appellate Court, six of which have resulted in published opinions. He has authored several articles published in the Opinion section of the newspaper on both legal and environmental matters.

John has a history of public service. He served six years on the Chula Vista City Council, two of those years as Deputy Mayor. He is a former member of the Chula Vista Planning Commission. His commitment while in office to public safety resulted in Mr. Moot being the second non-sworn peace officer to be given an honorary lifetime membership in the Chula Vista Police Officers Association.

John served as the Chairman of the San Diego Regional Energy Policy Advisory Council which conducted a 30-year infrastructure study and published the comprehensive San Diego Regional Energy Plan adopted by the San Diego Association of Governments. While on the Executive Committee of the San Diego Regional Power Pool, in 1999, John helped orchestrate one of the largest purchases of green energy in the State of California at that time. For the last eight years, John has served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Sustainable Energy. He is the immediate past president, having served two years as President and CEO.

John formerly served on the Board of the Eastlake Educational Foundation and currently serves on Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center’s Board and the Finance Committee of the Downtown San Diego Partnership. He served as Chairman of a joint elementary and high school task force as well as a campaign finance reform committee which proposed sweeping changes to the City’s campaign finance law. His commitment to community service resulted in his induction into the Center for Public Interest Law’s Wall of Fame, along with several other prominent San Diego judges and attorneys.

John is a fourth generation attorney from Buffalo, New York, where his father, grandfather, and great grandfather were respected members of Buffalo’s legal community.
